Sit comfortably cross-legged in Sukhasana or Siddhasana (page 10), or on a chair, with your spine straight. Women should touch their right thumb to their right middle finger and their left thumb to their pinky for Santosha Mudra. Men should reverse the fingers. Concentrate on following your breath as it moves in your body. It may help to count your breaths, such as 4 counts for an inhale and 6 for an exhale. If your mind is especially overactive and you find counting frustrating, listen to the sounds around you. Observe them without commentary. Practice active listening without agenda. Allow yourself whatever experience comes forth. There is no right way as you explore being present for 3–5 minutes.
Variation: Another option for focusing and calming the mind is to say silently as you inhale “San” and silently as you exhale “tosha,” with the intention of embracing the present from a place of acceptance.
